Drilling Chemicals

Drilling Chemicals are additives which are used in the various well operations. They are referred to as Drilling Mud or Drilling Fluid Chemicals. The drilling mud can be either a water base fluid or an oil base fluid. It depends on the types of formation, depth of well, and preference of the operator.
Defoamers

Defoamers are additives that enable the rapid release of trapped gaseous compounds such as air. This is critical when a fluid is agitated on surface such that the entrapped air cannot impact a fluid’s performance when utilized.

Flocculants

Solids gathered within drilling fluids during a drilling operation need to be removed as quickly as possible from the fluid to maintain fluid quality. Flocculants can be added at surface to the returned fluid to increase the speed at which these solids can be separated.

OBM Products

As an alternative to water based muds, oil based muds or “OBM’s” protect water sensitive formations by relying on a continuous phase of oil, wherein the internal phase of the fluid is water, typically in the form of micro droplets. To establish a OBM successfully, several products are commonly used such as primary and secondary emulsifiers, along with oil wetting agents.

Clay Stabilizers

Fluids utilized downhole can contact solids underground, these solids can contain varying amounts of clays which can swell and migrate (slough) during operations. Ideally, the fluids utilized contain Clay Stabilizers which prevent interactions with clays and in turn prevent formation damage.

Foaming Agents

In scenarios when trapped air or other gaseous compounds are utilized to the benefit of a fluid’s performance, foaming agents help entrap these gases and disperse the gas such that the maximum performance is achieved.

Lubricants

Friction caused upon a drilling string can impede the performance of a drill bit downhole. Lubricants aid this by increasing the lubricity of the drilling string on several materials (depending on the lubricant used). Importantly, the lubricant must be compatible with the drilling fluid being used.

Wetting Agents

Wetting agents modify what fluid is most attracted to a surface. For instance, a water-wetting agent will encourage water to become the dominant saturating force, expelling lingering oil from the surface face, and vice versa with oil-wetting agents. This is desirable for instance if control over a solid’s physical characteristics in a liquid is needed (improving dispersion, increasing suspension, etc.).

Scale Inhibitors

Water solutions always contain scaling tendencies, referring to the want for inorganic solids within the water to either dissolve or precipitate. Through the use of scale inhibitors, solids that would typically precipitate and block a flow channel or “scale off” can be prevented from doing so.

Corrosion Inhibitors

Metals that are contacted with fluids of any type can corrode, in which parts of the metal dissolve into the fluid, leaving pitting and inducing structural integrity loss. Corrosion inhibitors can protect metals by either forming a thin film layer to stop the interaction, or by healing the metal as fluids interact with it.

Lost Circulation Materials

When drilling, in the event that large amounts of losses are observed which are related to natural fractures or “Vugs”, materials can be added to the drilling fluid which pack off the lose area. These materials vary depending on the fluid being used and the rock present downhole.

Viscosifiers

Viscosifiers vary depending on the situation they are used in but in general perform the same function, adjusting the viscosity or “thickness” of a fluid. Adjusting the thickness of a fluid can create beneficial effects such as the ability to transport solids within the fluid. Many factors should be considered when selecting a viscosifier such as the fluid its used in, the purpose of the fluid, the residue damage from the viscosifier.

Fluid Loss Additives

Solids present within a wellbore have varying rates of permeability (pores that allow fluid to travel through the solid substance). In the event that when drilling, fluid begins to migrate through permeable solids, products such as fluid loss additives can be added to block these permeable areas, allowing drilling operations to continue unimpeded.

Production Chemicals

This section highlights Arkon Solutions intermediates for oil and gas production. Our product line includes unique, innovative solutions in addition to the tried-and-true technologies. Many other products are available for specific applications and we are happy to provide additional information upon request.
Demulsifiers

In a mixed fluid scenario when oils and water are present (such as produced wellbore fluids), the fluid itself is typically emulsified, wherein the oil and water is present as droplets (microscopic or even ultramicroscopic sized) that are distributed. These emulsions can cause hindrances that are best solved upfront with demulsifers which are additives that enable the separation of the two fluid phases rapidly.

Surfactants

Prior to introducing a new fluid species into a fluid present downhole, surfactants can be added to the foreign fluid to prevent the creation of emulsions.

Lubricants

In scenarios where metal on metal contact occurs, lubrication can limit the damage of the metals and ease the contact stresses enabling longevity of the metal substances and decreasing the effort required to perform the operation.

Biocides

Biocides are utilized to prevent bacterial buildup within producing wellbores, limiting the amount of bacterial influence on a fluids profile. This action also prevents microbial induced corrosion (MIC) of the infrastructure handling the produced fluid.

Scale Inhibitors

Aqueous fluids always contain scaling tendencies, referring to the want for inorganic solids within the water to either dissolve or precipitate. Using scale inhibitors, solids that would typically precipitate and block a flow channel or “scale off” can be prevented from doing so. This can be critical for producing wells as the aqueous fluids which are in a downhole state alter drastically when produced above surface, potentially enabling natural precipitation.

Iron Control Agents

Dissolved iron present within downhole formation water can cause hindrances when a fluid is produced (organic deposition and inorganic deposition). This is due to several factors, chief among which is the ability for iron to rapidly interact and cause precipitation with many chemical species present within produced fluids. Iron control additives block these interactions and allow iron to remain in a liquid, water soluble state.

Anti-Sludge Agents

Produced fluids typically include a variety of hydrocarbon species intermixed with each other that when downhole are naturally fluidic. When produced however, the factors that enable the hydrocarbons to remain fluid are altered and, in some cases cause gelatin or even solidification to occur, this altered state is typically referred to as “sludge”. Anti-sludging agents can be used to prevent this physical shift by mimicking materials present downhole which keep the produced fluid in a fluid state.

Drag Reducers

Produced fluids that are pumped via pipeline are naturally inclined to do so in a turbulent flow state (irregular fluctuations and mixing) causing increased energy demands to push the fluid to its destination. Drag reducers alter the flow state of the produced fluid to laminar flow (a parallel fluid state in which no lateral mixing occurs, allowing adjacent fluid layers to slip past each other) drastically reducing the effort and energy required to push a fluid through a pipeline.

Solvents

In scenarios where a produced fluid causes debris immediately upon leaving a formation stable state, solvents (organic and inorganic) can be added.

Industrial & Construction

This section highlights our chemical products for industrial and construction applications. The Arkon Solutions product line includes unique, innovative solutions in addition to the tried-and-true technologies. Many other products are available for specific applications and we are happy to provide additional information upon request.
Dispersants

Cement slurries are non-Newtonian fluids, and their flow characteristics can be very complex. Dispersants can improve flow properties by reducing friction and lowering pumping pressure requirements, improving slurry homogeneity, and providing fluid loss and ease of mixing for densified slurries. Dispersant loading is critical, as over-application can result in phase separation and increase free water as the cement sets.

Absorbents

Absorbents are substances that have the capacity to absorb a fluid rapidly and are typically used to control the flow of liquids. During absorption, absorbents typically increase in size and therefore can be utilize to block flow channels during operations.

Solvents

Solvents are liquids that have the capacity to dissolve certain solid materials and convert those materials to a liquid state. Many liquids dissolve certain solids, but a good solvent has a relatively large capacity for the solid being dissolved.

Flocculants

Flocculants are products that when added to a liquid solution containing suspended debris, have the ability to modify physical characteristics of the debris, making it far easier to remove the debris. Typically, this is done by increasing the speed at which the debris within the solution separates via gravity.

Surfactants

Surfactants have applications in every aspect of petroleum production due to their ability to greatly influence surface and interfacial chemistry. Our surfactant portfolio contains neutral, cationic and anionic surfactants that are oil, water or acid soluble. All products are provided as unformulated concentrates.

Biocides

Managing the biological composition of water is critical to prevent issues such as microbiologically induced corrosion (MIC), fouling from biomass accumulation, and souring of production fluids. Biocides can be used to reduce the bacterial population, thereby maintaining asset integrity and fluid quality.

Erosion Control & Tackifiers

Erosion control and tackifiers are important to prevent soil erosion and improve the stability of the soil. Erosion control products such as mulches are used to reduce erosion and promote vegetation growth, while tackifiers are used to bind soil particles together and prevent their movement due to wind or water.

Foaming Truck Detergent

Cleaning solutions, such as foaming truck wash work by increasing the residence time of a cleaning solution via foaming to a vertical surface, enabling the liquid product to dissolve debris and leave a water wet surface, wherein a simple water wash can leave a surface clean of the debris being removed.

Hard Surface Cleaners & Degreasers

Our product line of cleaners and degreasers are highly effective and versatile designed for heavy-duty applications in industry or at home. When used in concentrated form, our products degreases industrial machinery, removes grease from hard surfaces and cleans engine parts. When diluted, it can also be used as a cleaner for mirrors and windows without leaving streaks and residues. Specifically designed for degreasing applications, our products require less contact time and mechanical action than other industrial cleaners.

Stimulation & Fracturing

This section highlights our stimulation and fracturing chemistries. The Arkon Solutions product line includes unique, innovative solutions in addition to the tried and true technologies. Many other products are available for specific applications and we are happy to provide additional information upon request.
Friction Reducers

Slickwater treatments utilize high rates to carry proppant into the formation and generate a highly complex fracture network. To maximize the fluid rates, polyacrylamide friction reducers are used. The Arkon Solutions product line has been curated to include field-proven chemistries for various operational conditions. Products are selected based on several complex requirements, including salinity, temperature, formation, and whether or not viscosity is desired.

HV Friction Reducers

During fracturing operations in which liquids are utilized to fracture rock downhole (separate and maintain separation of the rock), it is sometimes desirable to have a viscous, relatively thick fluid perform this role. To do so, high viscosity (HV) friction reducers can be utilized to enable low friction and high viscosity performance within a fluid.

Surfactants

Surfactants have applications in every aspect of petroleum production due to their ability to greatly influence surface and interfacial chemistry. Our surfactant portfolio contains neutral, cationic and anionic surfactants that are oil, water or acid soluble. All products are provided as unformulated concentrates.

Clay Stabilizers

Formation damage can result when an aqueous stimulation fluid comes into contact with formation clays. Formation damage mechanisms include clay swelling and migration. The addition of a clay control additive can mitigate these damaging effects by displacing the clay interlayer cation, which attracts water, with one that does not.

Gellants

Gellants are products that when added to a fluid encourage the development of viscosity under certain conditions (those conditions enable precise control of when a fluid thickens). Mainly sourced from the food industry, gellants can be further utilized through the addition of crosslinkers to develop tremendous amounts of viscosity.

Crosslinkers

Crosslinkers are used to exponentially increase the viscosity of a base fluid. Crosslinking a fluid increases carrying capacity, thereby allowing higher proppant concentrations to be pumped. Crosslinked fluids have the ability to alter fracture geometry by increasing the fracture width.

Biocides

Managing the biological composition of water is critical to prevent issues such as microbiologically induced corrosion (MIC), fouling from biomass accumulation, and souring of production fluids. Biocides can be used to reduce the bacterial population, thereby maintaining asset integrity and fluid quality.

Buffers

Buffers are additives that when utilized in a fluid help control the pH (acidity or alkalinity) of a solution. This can be desirable in situations where fluid pH dictates the functionality of a system, for instance the buffers in human blood prevent acidification of the human body when drinking acidic canned soda.

Corrosion Inhibitors

Corrosion Inhibitors are chemical substances that when present in the corrosion system at a suitable concentration decreases the corrosion rate, without significantly changing the concentration of any corrosive agent. The presence of oxygen can also oxidize metal surfaces and further facilitate corrosion. Film forming corrosion inhibitors create a protective barrier on the metal surface that prevents these gasses from degrading equipment.

Foaming Agents

Foamers are surface active agents used to create foams that are stable in a variety of downhole conditions. Injecting these foamers into gas or gas condensate wells will lower surface tension of downhole fluids, thereby unloading water from low pressure wells. Our portfolio includes foamers that are compatible with a range of water chemistries, including high brines.

Flowback Aids

Flowback aids are surfactants that are designed to enhance the recovery of water-based stimulation fluids following the treatment of a well. They lower the surface and interfacial tension of the treatment fluid and reduce the potential for phase trapping, thereby maximizing the well production volume and rate.

Scavengers

Oxygen Scavengers: Dissolved oxygen in production or drilling fluids can rapidly lead to oxygen corrosion of pipe, equipment, and steel infrastructure. Chemical oxygen scavengers are a highly effective means of preventing oxygen from participating in corrosion reactions.

Hydrogen Sulphide Scavengers: H2S scavengers convert sulphide species into an inert and less hazardous form. H2S has solubility in both water and hydrocarbons, so both water soluble and oil soluble scavengers are offered.

Cementing Chemicals

This section highlights our cementing chemistries. The Arkon Solutions product line includes unique, innovative solutions in addition to the tried and true technologies. Many other products are available for specific applications and we are happy to provide additional information upon request.
Accelerators

The addition of accelerators in cement slurries is used to shorten the setting time. This may be necessary when
reservoir temperatures are lower and/or a shorter wait time is desired. Accelerators can also be used to offset
the delaying effect of other cement additives.

Expansion Additives

Cement expansion additives increase the overall volume of the cement as it sets. There additives work by way of
crystalline growth or in-situ gas generation. This expansion of the cement can improve the quality of the bond to the
casing and formation; thereby enhancing zonal isolation and minimizing fluid and gas migration.

Pre-Flush and Spacers

Proper preparation of the wellbore is key to achieving zonal isolation. Pre-flushes and spacers are designed to remove remaining drilling fluid particles to surface, leave the formation water-wet, and physically separate drilling mud from cement slurry. These fluids are pumped prior to the lead cement to provide the highest chance of successful cement-formation bonding and reduce the likelihood of annular gas migration.

Fluid Loss and Gas Migration Control

Fluid loss and gas migration issues can pose serious threats to the integrity of the well casing. Water loss results in dehydrated cement with altered, unpredictable physical properties, and could damage water-sensitive formations. Preventive measures include reducing fluid loss by creating a networked filter cake at the formation face, altering the flow properties of the cement to reduce transition time between liquid and setting, or adding expansion chemistries.

Foaming Surfactants

Foamers are surface active agents used to create foams that are stable in a variety of downhole conditions. Foaming reduces the density of cement, allowing placement across weak formations without risking damage to the formation and lost circulation issues. Foamed cement can also be chosen for applications where the risk of gas migration is high, as it effectively traps gases in the foam.

Defoaming Surfactants

During the mixing process excessive foaming can occur in cement slurries. The unwanted foam may obscure slurry
density estimates and could result in pump cavitation and subsequent equipment damage. Defoaming additives
perform at very low concentrations to modify surface tension and effectively prevent or disperse foams.

Retarders

Cement set times require significant variability based on the type of job and well conditions. Retarders decrease the
speed of hydration thereby slowing cement setting. This can be particularly important for deeper, high temperature
wells and large jobs with extended pump times.

Suspension Additives

Solids settling in the cement slurry can result in poor zonal isolation, particularly when cementing deviated wells.
Suspension additives help the cement particles to remain suspended in the slurry, improving performance and
preventing the development of free water at the top of a slurry.

Plant-Based Products

Products derived from plants and other natural occurring fauna are desirable in that the supply of these raw ingredients is refreshable and dependent on naturally occurring sources.

Low Toxicity Products

Products that provide a low toxicity profile are typically less impactful on the environments they are utilized in, enabling the ecosystem to remain untouched and undistributed.

Ice Melt & Ice Control

Certain climates present on Earth require the use of ice melt & ice control products to enable everyday life to continue when temperatures drop. Typically, these products are hazardous to the environment (salinification of surrounding ecosystems) however environmentally friendly alternatives are becoming more widely used removing this lasting footprint.

Mulch Additives

Mulch additives are products that are utilized to enable vegetation to grow initially, either by controlling the humidity of an environment or by increasing residence time of the seeding element, these additives are utilized to perform several tasks in an easy-to-handle method during operations.

Surfactants

Surfactants have applications in every aspect of petroleum production due to their ability to greatly influence surface and interfacial chemistry. Our surfactant portfolio contains neutral, cationic and anionic surfactants that are oil, water or acid soluble. All products are provided as unformulated concentrates.

CEMENTING CHEMICALS

Cementing Chemicals

This section highlights our cementing chemistries. The Arkon Solutions product line includes unique, innovative solutions in addition to the tried and true technologies. Many other products are available for specific applications and we are happy to provide additional information upon request.
Accelerators

The addition of accelerators in cement slurries is used to shorten the setting time. This may be necessary when
reservoir temperatures are lower and/or a shorter wait time is desired. Accelerators can also be used to offset
the delaying effect of other cement additives.
